Principles

Definition

A principle in this context refers to a statement that provides guidance about how to behave in order to achieve a desired outcome. Different principles target different groups of actors. For example, the principles around adult learning target community educators, while those around engaging farmers in soil health research target researchers and others who are supporting farmers’ experimentation. Basic experimentation principles represent fundamental laws of research, which everyone involved in the research needs to internalize.

Principles for engaging farmers in soil health research

These draft principles were developed in consultation with Soil Health workshop participants in Eldoret in 2017. Their aim is to highlight behaviors that will help to fully engage farmers in the soil health research we are doing with them.

Principles for working with adult learners

These principles are most relevant for community educators (teachers, extension agents, lead farmers, researchers, etc.). They are based on Dr. Jane Vella’s dialogue education approach and highlight effective facilitation behaviors to lead to improved adult learning outcomes.
