These questions pertain to each farmer cluster that received a smart phone. If your organization had 30 farmer clusters that received a phone you would have 30 sets of answers to the following:

Learning questions around smartphones

  1. Governance: What rules did farmers set for themselves to govern shared use? (Please provide the original set of rules drawn up by the farmers as well as your analysis.)
  2. Control of device: Ask farmers to explain to you: What are the characteristics of farmers who’ve been given the responsibility to keep the device on behalf of cluster members?
  3. Group dynamics: How are the phones affecting group dynamics?
  4. Access: Are all members of a cluster satisfied with their access? Why or why not?
  5. Challenges: What kinds of challenges are members facing with regards to the phone? How are members managing phone charging? How much does it cost per charging of the phone?
  6. Training effectiveness: Was the phone use training effective? What percentage of group members can satisfactorily operate the phone, specifically to (i) Take a picture,(ii)  watch a video, (iii) send a message via WhatsApp, (iv) perform a google search?
  7. Information systems:
    • What kinds of information are farmers sharing with one another? About the research? About the videos?
    • What kinds of information are farmers accessing on the phones and for what purpose? (Possible student follow-up: Are they/how are they applying what they learn?)
  8. Cross cluster learning: Are the phone able to be used effectively across groups if cross group members have not had face-to-face encounters?
